Phonic Expectations

St Paul’s Phonic Expectations

At St Paul’s, we are passionate about supporting children to develop a life-long love of reading – all of our children deserve to read well and quickly.  It is vital that they master the key skills of decoding and blending quickly.  We provide daily phonic lessons that begin right at the start of Reception as we begin introducing the sounds in the first full week of term.  We begin with 15-20 minute sessions, building to 35 minute lessons as time progresses.  In addition to the daily lesson, staff ensure that all children “keep up” by identifying children who may need a mini intervention - this may support recognition of sounds, oral blending or blending to read.

During last year, we switched from teaching phonics in small groups to new phonic system whereby we deliver a systematic synthetic programme called Essential Letters and Sounds.

Take a look at the table below to see what your child will be learning in Phonics each term during this year as they move through Early Years and Key Stage 1 – please note that due to switching from one system to another, this does not fully represent what was taught last year.
